Legendary former Juventus, Parma, and Italy defender Fabio Cannavaro feels that AC Milan are not the only team to have benefited from the Rossoneri’s comeback win against Inter in the derby.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Cannavaro emphasized how the result is just as important for Napoli’s hopes of catching Inter in the Scudetto race as it is for the Rossoneri’s.
Inter went in to the derby four points ahead of both the Rossoneri and the Partenopei with a game in hand, and a halftime lead saw them move seven points clear of their city rivals.
This scoreline would have also seen Inter go seven points clear of Napoli, albeit without a game in hand, and would have made getting back into the Scudetto chase look to be a tall order for Luciano Spalletti’s side.
However, the Nerazzurri let their advantage disintegrate in the space of a quickfire Olivier Giroud brace, and now they are only a point ahead of their city rivals, and could have the same slender advantage over Napoli should they beat Venezia today.
Inter travel to face Napoli next weekend, and as Cannavaro points out, the Partenopei will only have their confidence boosted by seeing the Nerazzurri lose in the derby.
“If I were Spalletti, I would have my team go over the derby again in order to build excitement,” he stated. “They can understand that their isn’t such a big gap from Inter, and that they can dream.”
