Former Palermo and Chievo Verona goalkeeper Stefano Sorrentino believes that Inter had been the better side in Saturday’s derby clash with AC Milan, but lost because they weren’t clinical with their chances.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli, Sorrentino emphasized that the Nerazzurri failed to score their chances as a reason for the loss, and also dismissed suggestions that their squad depth isn’t sufficient.
Inter created more and better chances than the Rossoneri for much of the first half of the derby, and were more than good value for the one-goal lead that they took into the half-time break.
In the second half, they initially looked to be in control of the match, but Milan grew into the game as they pushed for an equalizer, finding one and then almost immediately after scoring a second to overhaul the deficit.
“Inter have the strongest team in Serie A, they deserved to win the derby but in football you have to take your chances,” he said.
Sorrentino also gave the view that squad depth had not been a major problem for the Nerazzurri despite the poor performances of the players who came off the bench in the second half against Milan.
“I don’t agree with the idea that the Inter bench is not up to par,” he stated. “I remember that the Supercoppa Italiana was decided by Sanchez off the bench.”
“I think when it’s always the same players coming off the bench they don’t come on with the right attitude,” he added.
