Inter have been in their worst stretch of the entire form of the entire season and will be desperate to pick themselves up to be at their strongest for the Serie A run-in.
However, as Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport highlight in today’s print edition, Nerazzurri coach Simone Inzaghi has a worrying precedent of difficulties over the second half of campaigns with his former side Lazio.
When at Lazio, Inzaghi often had the Biancocelesti enjoying a very strong start to the season, coming straight out of the traps and looking among the favourites for top four if not the Scudetto.
However, in four of his five full seasons in the Italian capital, the coach managed to just once enjoy better form over the second half of the campaign than the first.
The most striking example of this trend came in the 2017-18 season, when the team’s win percentage fell from 63% down to 47%, and they went from collecting an average of 2.11 points per game to just 1.68.
There is hope in the fact that the coach seemed to arrest this trend in his final season with Lazio, but he will have to work to prove that he can sustain the pace with a team over a full season.
The Scudetto race is extremely tight, and even a dip in form that only costs a few points could be completely decisive, and so Inzaghi must aim for the team to experience no such loss of form.
