Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that scoring a hundred goals in Serie A this season would hardly be outside the realm of possibility.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Bergomi gave his thoughts on Inter’s attacking prowess this season as well as on the need for defensive balance.
Inter have scored five goals from their opening two matches of the season, a strong start to the campaign albeit not quite statistically on course for them to break into triple digits in terms of their goal tally for the campaign.
However, given the number of shots that they have mustered, and the sense that the team is only starting to click into gear, the feeling is starting to grow that the Nerazzurri will be able to score in virtually all of their matches, and get quite a few emphatic victories by several goals, maybe even more than they did last time around.
Bergomi said that “It’s something that they can do, it’s not an unrealistic fantasy for a team like Inzaghi’s. Inter are a team that attack with balance and harmony, using team moves more than individual quality.”
“On the other hand there will certainly be some tougher matches on the way in which it will be more difficult to break through,” he noted.
One aspect of Inter’s attack that could be a problem noted by Bergomi is that “Without Perisic there’s no one-on-one threat on the flanks, Tottenham are already getting the best out of him.”
“But the attacking possibilities are numerous,” he went on, “starting with the variety that Lukaku can bring. Romelu stretches teams and gives a threat in behind, so Lautaro is able to reach the goal much more than before.”
“Now we’ll see if the Argentine will make a further leap in terms of consistency,” Bergomi added, “but in the meantime there’s one thing that’s certain, that Lukaku, even when he’s not at his best, can commit any defender.”
Asked if he thinks that Serie A title would be a virtual certainty if Inter score a hundred goals on the season, Bergomi replied “Absolutely not, very often the best defense wins out. Eighty goals might be enough, but you have to concede no more than 25-30 goals.”
And of Inter’s defense he said that “The defense is very strong, even if there isn’t a player who can go man-to-man against a quick forward in a footrace.”
“Skriniar’s stay guarantees quality,” he noted, “even if he has to find his best form at the start of the season,” he said, “and I liked de Vrij’s performance against Spezia, he shouldn’t be underestimated.”
