Current Tottenham Hotspur and former Inter coach Antonio Conte feels that winning trophies in Europe is important for a coach and wants to go far in continental competition after missing out at the final hurdle with the Nerazzurri.
Speaking in a press conference ahead of Tottenham’s Champions League group stage opener against Marseille, as reported by FCInterNews, the coach recalled that he had narrowly missed out on winning the Europa League with Sevilla in his first season in charge at Inter.
Conte won the Serie A title in his second and final campaign as Inter coach, but the team went trophyless in his first season in charge, missing out in the tightest of circumstances by losing 3-2 to Sevilla in the final of the Europa League.
The former Juventus, Italy, and Chelsea boss has gained something of a reputation for being a specialist in league title races and not being as successful in European knockout competitions, having also dropped out of the Champions League group stage twice with Inter, though he doesn’t feel this is the case.
“Raising a trophy in Europe is important for every coach,” Conte said, “I know how difficult it is, especially in the Champions League. It’s important, but you are more likely to win if you coach a team that’s used to winning.”
“Two season ago with Inter we lost the Europa League final against Sevilla,” he noted, “but it’s always my ambition to win in Europe. I know it’s tough, but at the same time I have that ambition.”
