Eight members of the City Council of Milan have registered their opposition to Inter and AC Milan’s plans to demolish the San Siro and build a new stadium in the city.

This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who report that the eight Councillors held a press conference today where they made clear that they will stand in opposition to the clubs’ plans.

Inter and Milan have been pushing to start construction on the new stadium as soon as they can, with the public debate on the matter set to conclude later this month.

Milan Mayor Beppe Sala stated today that he expects the final decision from the City Council to arrive in around a year.

However, the discussion is not one that will be straightforward, as eight of the City Council’s 48 members have made clear that they will oppose the plans.

The grounds for the Councillors’ opposition are both environmental and cultural.
