Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has admitted that goalkeeper Yann Sommer may leave on a free transfer next summer, amidst links to Inter.
The Switzerland international is out of contract with the Bundesliga club at the end of the season and is yet to pen an extension, prompting suggestions that Inter will make a move for him as a replacement for Samir Handanovic or Andre Onana.
In an interview with the Mitgedacht podcast, and as reported by FCInterNews.it, Virkus admitted that he did not know if Sommer would commit his future to Gladbach, and that nothing would be decided until after he had returned from international duty at the World Cup in Qatar.
“Yann was still injured, we all worked together to make sure he could fulfil his dream of playing in another World Cup,” Virkus declared.
“That’s why we gave it time. When he comes back here after the tournament and the holidays, there will be a decision to be made.
“The chances of a renewal are fifty-fifty,” he added.
Sommer joined Gladbach from FC Basel in 2014 and has made 335 appearances for the Fohlen, including 11 this season.
The 33-year-old has represented Switzerland on 79 occasions and played at three World Cups, in addition to two European Championships.
