Inter Mayor Beppe Sala feels that given the fact that Inter and AC Milan are the ones ultimately paying for the new stadium project in Milan, their wishes should guide it.
Speaking to Italian journalist Gianluca Gazzoli’s podcast, via FCInterNews, the Milan Mayor noted that whilst it would be his preference to keep the San Siro standing, he will respect the wishes of the clubs to demolish and replace it.
The question of whether or not to tear down the San Siro has been a central controversy surrounding Inter and Milan’s plans to build a new stadium.
Whilst there has been a significant amount of public opposition to tearing down the iconic stadium, the Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have made their stance clear that it would be infeasible to avoid doing so.
For his part, Sala feels that regardless of anyone else’s views, it should be the clubs’ decision to make.
“I have to enforce the rules and go by fundamental principles,” the Mayor said, “including the fact that the district must benefit from one new stadium – we’re discussing how to help the neighbourhood with the clubs.”
“I would have preferred to keep San Siro standing, but this would require important structural renovations, and Inter and Milan have already made clear that they don’t agree,” he continued.
“And since they’re the ones paying for it, I have to respect their wishes.”
