Chelsea could reignite their interest in signing Inter wingback Denzel Dumfries now that Reece James has suffered a recurrence of his knee injury.
This according to Italian news outlet FCInterNews, who suggest that the injury to James could immediately make Dumfries a priority target for the Blues once again.
Chelsea had already been targeting Dumfries during the summer transfer window, though they failed to sign him then.
The Dutchman has hardly fallen off the Premier League giants’ radar, however, as they have been persistently linked with a move for next summer or even the January window.
Right-back James made his return from injury in today’s Premier League win over Bournemouth.
The 23-year-old had been out for more than two months, having last played for Chelsea in their Champions League win over AC Milan in October.
James missed out on the World Cup with England, but was back this evening.
However, in his first match back the Englishman suffered what could be a recurrence of his knee problem.
It remains to be seen how serious James’s injury is, but if it will rule him out for a significant period then his club could immediately move to reinforce at right-back.
If this is to be the case, then James would be one of the first names on Chelsea’s list.
