Inter’s squad is likely to look quite a bit different at the start of next season compared to its current state, as Milan Skriniar is likely to only be the first of multiple players to leave and be replaced.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who note how between the need to bring in transfer revenues and the likelihood of some players leaving at the end of their deals, there could be major turnover in the Nerazzurri’s squad.
The imminent departure of Skriniar who will join Paris Saint-Germain is the most high profile loss that Inter are set to endure in the summer transfer window, and the one that is anticipated to affect the team most on the pitch.
However, the fact remains that the Nerazzurri will have to make at least one high-profile sale during the window, as they are in need of the revenues that would come from a significant transfer fee in order to meet financial targets.
The likes of Denzel Dumfries and Marcelo Brozovic now look to be among the main candidates to be sold, but a lot will depend on what the interest looks like in the pair across the transfer market come June.
Meanwhile, the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Francesco Acerbi are currently only at Inter on one-season loan deals, and there is absolutely no certainty about whether the club will try to keep hold of them or now.
In terms of expiring contracts, Skriniar’s is certainly the one about which the most ink has been spilled, but his defensive comrade Stefan de Vrij could also decide to leave on a free transfer in the event that he rejects the Nerazzurri’s offer of a contract extension.
All of Samir Handanovic, Danilo D’Ambrosio, and Roberto Gagliardini also see their deals run out at the end of June, and there is a good chance of all three leaving.
As if all of this wasn’t enough, Joquin Correa’s continued poor form and struggles with injury and fitness problems has meant that the Argentine is a player who the club will in all likelihood try to move on from this summer.
The probability of every single one of these players leaving in one transfer window is certainly not high, but the likelihood is that more than a few will be gone before the start of next season.
Moreover, for each player who leaves, a new signing is almost certain to arrive to take their place in the squad.
Accordingly, the Gazzetta notes, Inter could head into the 2023-24 season with a squad that barely resembles the current one.
