Inter could be playing for a significant financial impact off the pitch by reaching the quarterfinals of the Champions League in their round of sixteen tie against Porto.
This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the €20 million windfall of reaching the next round of the competition could significantly impact the Nerazzurri’s plans during the summer.
It has been widely reported that Inter are seeking to reach a €60 million net profit by the end of the current fiscal year at the end of June, whilst they are also likely to set a financial target for the rest of the summer.
However, it is not exactly clear how these objectives will be met.
At least one big sale is likely, with wingback Denzel Dumfries the player who has been most strongly linked with a departure for a big fee.
However, another major sale cannot be ruled out if the fee for the Dutchman is not sufficient and the Nerazzurri cannot bring in cash from sales like those of Andrea Pinamonti and Cesare Casadei last summer.
If Inter are to reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League, though, the revenues from participation in that stage of Europe’s top competition would be a very significant financial boost for Inter, the Gazzetta highlights.
Inter did not even take reaching the knockouts of the competition for granted when they planned out their financial strategy leading into the summer.
Particularly after being drawn into what was widely considered to be the “group of death” in the Champions League with Bayern Munich and Barcelona, Inter’s directors had based their budgetary projections on the presumption of revenue from dropping into the Europa League.
Accordingly, the Nerazzurri have already gone further than was expected in budgetary terms, and could yet go on further.
If Inter are to do so, it would give the club financial wiggle room to meet their summer targets without necessarily forcing more than one major sale.
Meanwhile, the club are also negotiating several contract extensions, and those talks could be affected if the team bring in the windfall of revenues for participating in the Champions League quarterfinals.
Lastly, Inter’s pursuit of a player like Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram, who will be available on a free transfer but would command high wages, would also be put closer in reach by the revenues of reaching the net round of Europe’s top competition.
