The challenge of Porto winger on Inter wingback Matteo Darmian in the second half of yesterday evening’s Champions League round of sixteen first leg match was not a clear penalty.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who argue that referee Srdjan Jovanonvic was not wrong to not point to the spot, nor was VAR Bastian Dankert for not intervening.

Inter certainly felt that they had a case to be awarded a penalty after a clumsy tackle by Porto’s Galeno on Darmian in the Porto penalty area yesterday evening.

For the Gazzetta, it was certainly worth a look, and had Jovanovic adjudged the contact to be worth a foul and penalty, it would not have been a “clear and obvious” error for VAR to overturn.

However, the newspaper argues, nor was it a clear mistake to wave play on, as there was ultimately not that much in the challenge.
