Former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that the problems that the team have been having with consistency this season could make finishing in the top four in Serie A difficult.
Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, the former defender noted that the Nerazzurri’s principal issue this campaign has been keeping the levels that they set with their best performances maintained over longer periods.
Sunday’s loss away to Bologna seemed to confirm that Inter are not a team who can string more than a couple positive results together at this moment in time.
There has been no shortage of positive indicators over the course of the entire season, in the form of statement wins against teams like Napoli, Barcelona, and AC Milan.
However, from Bergomi’s perspective, this Inter team is now defined by its inability to turn these most positive results into a coherent run.
“In 2023, Inter have been able to start strong, beating Napoli and immediately narrowing the gap to just eight points,” he noted.
“But instead of taking advantage of the enthusiasm caused by that moment, a few days later they drew 2-2 away to Monza.”
“You can’t afford results like this when you have a team in front of you who are not stopping, who are demonstrating week to week that they are the strongest team and deserve their lead.”
“Napoli play very well, but so do Inter when they’re in form, they can play great football.”
“The problem for them has been maintaining those levels for several matches at a time,” Bergomi added.
The former defender noted that “Inter are the team that successfully dribbles least in Serie A.”
“They don’t have players who beat their man one on one, so they don’t create numerical superiority.”
“So it can be tough for them against anyone, especially away,” he added.
“And now they have to beware, securing the Champions League will be tough, the margin for error has run out.”
