Inter striker Romelu Lukaku’s dreadful miss during the second half of yesterday evening’s Serie A loss to Fiorentina was only the “tip of the iceberg” for the Nerazzurri’s goal drought in Serie A over recent matches.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who argue that everyone is partially to blame for the team’s profligate finishing over recent matches.

Over the past three Serie A matches, Inter have scored just once, and that was from the spot against Spezia.

This has meant that, despite the fact that the Nerazzurri have conceded only four goals during the period, they have picked up zero points.

Moreover, a 1-0 loss away to Bologna last month was another example of Inter’s recent bluntness in front of goal, whilst the Nerazzurri also scored a grand total of one goal over two legs against Porto in the Champions League despite progressing.

In certain matches, such as losses to Bologna and Juventus, the issues has been that the Nerazzurri have not created chances.

However, in others such as yesterday’s loss to Fiorentina or the defeat away to Spezia, Inter have certainly had good opportunities to find the back of the net.

These have routinely been squandered, however.

It is true that Lukaku’s miss from a position where it almost seemed more difficult to whiff at the ball than to simply tap it into an empty net was the most eye-catching miss.

However, there was also a poor miss from Henrikh Mkhitaryan during the first half yesterday, which saw the Armenian do everything but score after a sparkling run across most of the pitch.

Then there is the penalty miss by Lautaro Martinez against Spezia, and in truth any number of moments in which Inter’s forwards, and all of the players, could have been more clinical and switched-on.
