Inter striker Lautaro Martinez will start on the bench in tomorrow evening’s Serie A match away to Salernitana.
This according to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset, via FCInterNews, who report that the 25-year-old will not be in the Nerazzurri’s starting eleven for the second league match in a row as the team travel to the Arechi.
Martinez has not been anything like his best form over the past few matches.
The Argentine was singled out as the Nerazzurri’s worst performer in their 1-1 Coppa Italia semifinal first leg draw against Juventus on Tuesday.
Whilst victory at the World Cup in Qatar with the Argentine national team seemed to give the Inter striker an extra bit of motivation that had pushed him on to his best, now he has lost that spark
Moreover, after a very positive run that had seen the Argentine score eight goals in thirteen matches during January and February after the World Cup break, the goals have dried up.
Martinez has now gone seven matches without a goal, whilst it has been observed that his overall contribution to the team’s attacking play has diminished as his fitness levels have seemed to decline.
Accordingly, there looks to be a real chance that the 25-year-old will be dropped from the starting eleven for tomorrow evening’s match against Salernitana.
Recent performances have suggested that Martinez could be in need of a rest, and he will be given one against the Granata tomorrow evening in view of the upcoming Champions League quarterfinal first leg match against Benfica.
Instead, it would be Romelu Lukaku who is likely to start the match in attack for the Nerazzurri.
The Belgian had started in Inter’s return to action from the international break against Fiorentina last weekend, whilst he came off the bench against Juventus in the Coppa Italia on Tuesday.
