Inter coach Simone Inzaghi feels that despite his team’s woeful recent record in front of goal, they can quickly get back to scoring.
Speaking to Italian broadcaster SportMediaset ahead of tomorrow evening’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg match against Benfica, via FCInterNews, the coach also stressed that the Nerazzurri will need to get both the mental and the emotional side of tomorrow’s match right.
The goalscoring numbers in Inter’s recent matches do not make for heartening numbers.
Since a 2-0 win over Lecce last month, the Nerazzurri have a grand total of three goals to their name in six matches across all competitions.
Two of these were Romelu Lukaku penalty, whilst Robin Gosens scored early on in last Friday’s Serie A draw away to Salernitana.
This lack of goals has not reflected any lack of attacking intent or a lack of chances, but for one reason or another the Nerazzurri have simply appeared incapable of sticking the ball in the back of the net.
“It’s just one of those periods, where things aren’t going our way,” Inzaghi said of the goalscoring problems.
“The forwards are going through a difficult moment, but the important thing is that we create chances,” he continued.
“Any moment now, starting tomorrow in my view, this situation could change,” he added.
Of the significance of tomorrow evening’s match, Inzaghi said that “Tomorrow is a very important match for us on our journey, we deserve to be here.”
“We know what we’ve done in the Champions League, and what we’ve not been doing in the league, but this is a game all its own and we’re happy to be here,” the coach added.
Of what he anticipates from tomorrow evening’s match, Inzaghi said that “It will be a tough match, we need both our heads and hearts.”
“I have no doubt that we’ll have heart, but we’ll need to keep our heads given the tough moment we’re in,” he added.
“In the last two league matches we’ve taken forty shots on goal and only scored once, so we have to use our heads in trying to get the key moments to go our way,” the coach suggested.
