Inter striker Romelu Lukaku is set to be benched in this evening’s Champions League quarterfinal second leg match against Benfica.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, who report that the Belgian will not be in the starting eleven as it will instead be Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez who lead the line from the start.
Inter coach Simone Inzaghi will have to name his starting eleven for this evening’s massive quarterfinal second leg match in just a few hours, and perhaps the most significant doubt in terms of the selections will have come in attack.
This has often been the case in recent weeks, as the coach has regularly rotated which two attackers play from the start, whether in Serie A or in the Champions League.
There is little question that Lautaro Martinez will be one of the two strikers to start, as even with the Argentine hardly in his best form over the past few weeks, he is still considered an almost automatic starter in the most important matches.
However, as far as which striker starts alongside the 25-year-old, both of Lukaku and Dzeko have been reported to be in contention.
The Bosnian has started in each of the Nerazzurri’s three knockout matches in the Champions League so far, although Lukaku has come off the bench in each case.
In any event, Sky reports, it will likely be Dzeko who once again starts, with Lukaku an option on the bench as he has been so far in the knockouts.
Meanwhile, Marcelo Brozovic is predicted to keep his place at the base of midfield despite Hakan Calhanoglu being fit and available once again.
Sky’s complete predicted Inter starting eleven for this evening’s match is as follows:
Inter (3-5-2): Onana; Darmian, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Brozovic, Mkhitaryan; Dzeko
