Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana feels that not showing any fear is vital to playing for the Nerazzurri.
Speaking to InterTV following the Nerazzurri’s 3-3 draw against Benfica, via FCInterNews, the 27-year-old also heaped praise on his teammates as the team booked their place in the final four of the Champions League.
Onana was not able to keep yet another Champions League clean sheet, and in fact shipped three goals as Benfica scored twice late in the match, even if they were more or less just consolation goals for the Portuguese team given the scoreline.
However, the Cameroonian and his teammates gave a good account of themselves to secure the result they needed to see out their two-goal advantage from the first leg of the tie in Lisbon.
Just as important as the result was the manner in which it came, a performance which saw Inter manage the tempo of the match well against a Benfica team who have been nothing short of outstanding.
From keeper Onana’s perspective, not showing any intimidation against opposition of the Aguias’ quality was a key factor in the performance that the Nerazzurri put in.
“As I always say, when you play for Inter you can’t ever be afraid, and I couldn’t ask for better teammates, I’m at the best team I can be at.”
“We knew it would be tough,” the keeper said of facing Benfica, “but knowing our quality we were calm, and I believed in it from the first minute.”
“Players like Lautaro and Correa can make the difference,” he added, “I’m happy for them.”
Onana also noted that “Playing in this shirt gives you something extra, it’s a club that has a lot of history.”
“I’m spending day after day training with a great goalkeeper in Handanovic, it’s an honour,” he said of his journey at Inter.
“I always learn from him.”
“Playing with these players, for me, they’re simply the best.”
