Inter Milan and Netherlands wingback Denzel Dumfries relishes his national team’s new tactical system.

The Oranje returned to their roots under Ronald Koeman’s tutelage, reverting to a 4-3-3 formation.

Despite playing as a wingback in Inter’s 3-5-2 system, Dumfries still pulled off a remarkable display.

The Netherlands beat Greece with three unanswered goals in Thursday’s Euro 2024 qualifier, with the 27-year-old proving to be a great protagonist.

The right-back officially provided a couple of assists, while also laying a claim for a third.

“I didn’t make two, but three assists,” joked the Nerazzurri star in his post-match interview with NOS via FcInterNews.

This was a reference to the opening goal, where his decisive pass to Marten de Roon bounced off a defender.

On the other hand, Dumfries admitted that luck was on his side on his team’s third goal.

“The pass for the third goal went to Wout [Weghorst]. But on this occasion, it was more luck than skill.”

Finally, the wingback feels that the Netherlands can do well in the newly-adopted 4-3-3 formation.

“I think we’ve seen that we can do well in this system. But it’s up to the national coach to decide the formation.

“I felt good today. We managed to impose our game on the opponent and this gives us confidence to continue on this path.”
