Inter Milan have taken 54 points from their first 21 matches in a Serie A season for only the second time in their history.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, point out the Nerazzurri’s historic season after yesterday’s 1-0 win over Fiorentina.

Inter did not grab their most emphatic win of the season against Fiorentina yesterday.

Having beaten La Viola by a comprehensive 4-0 scoreline at the San Siro, it was a different story in Tuscany.

The Nerazzurri had to struggle and put their bodies on the line to preserve their clean sheet. And it was a Lautaro Martinez header from a corner that proved decisive for the 1-0 victory.

But the bottom line is that Inter emerged from the Stadio Artemio Franchi with three points.

That is something that the Nerazzurri are making a habit of this season.

And it means that Inter are now on 54 points. This is some haul considering that it is not even February yet.

Inter Take 54 Points From 21 Serie A Matches For Second Time In History

The rate at which Inter are currently picking up points would put them on track to finish the season with 97 points, mathematically speaking.

Of course, that is still a long way away. And things will only get tougher from here on out, particularly with the Champions League returning.

But the last time that Inter had taken this many points from their first 21 matches of a season, 97 was in fact their final points total.

That was during the 2006-07 season.

In a campaign that saw Italian football still reeling from the shock of the Calciopoli scandal, the Nerazzurri’s rivals were not at their highest level by any means.

So a star-studded Inter team coached by Roberto Mancini steamrolled their way to the title.

Since then, there have been other title wins. Even a European Treble.

But in terms of points, Inter have never been this relentless since that 2006-07 campaign.
