Gianluca Di Marzio reported today the figures and type of contract behind the Podolski deal.
“Lukas Podolski is set to join Inter after the Italian club reached an agreement with Arsenal,” wrote his official site. “The German striker will join the Italian club on a straight loan (no option to buy) for rest of the season, they will pay the Gunners 600,000 euro which will go up to 850/900 thousand euro should Inter qualify for next season’s Champions League- the clubs reached an agreement also thanks to Base Soccer which acted as the intermediary in the deal. Inter and Arsenal will discuss Podolski’s future once the loan deal expires, the German striker’s current contract with Arsenal expires in June of 2016. Podolski is expected to arrive in Milano this evening, he’ll take the medical tomorrow. The thing missing is the signed paperwork from Arsenal, but earlier today the two clubs ironed out the remaining details. Podolski is ready to play in Serie A.”
So you are correct to understand that this deal does NOT contain an option to buy. The two sides will meet again in June to discuss a permanent deal should Inter be interested in one.

Author’s note: This is great, and allows us to negotiate the big cash for a possible Shaqiri deal. I think that negotiation weighed heavily on deciding not to insert a buy-out clause. This keeps us both safe on the field, and financially. If he does well, he’ll be worth whatever we decide to pay for him, if/when we do. If he does not fit well with Inter and in Serie A, we lose very little. Great deal. Bravo Ausilio.
How do you feel about the figures of the deal?

I hope we are not going to lose him at the end! 🙁
I don’t like Podolski, so I’m happy this is only a loan deal.
The problem with no option to buy is that if he plays well and we want to keep him Arsenal can increase the fee. With an OPTION to buy we can either get him for a good price (lets say 10m) or NOT.
let say he’s doing well with us, but he will be entering last year of his contract by next june.
and with that condition, even your valuation for him is still too high (10m).
he will be relatively cheap by next june (although I’m not quite sure it will be ‘cheap’ for us since 5 million could be considered expensive in INTER’s world these days).
so even without the option to buy, we’re still had the advantage.
It’s only a loan because Voyeur thinks that if he plays well he can sell him for 10 mil
Good job Ausilio!
Like Mahdi said, this gives us some room to work on other transfers, such as Shaqiri or Lavezzi. I think this is smart. If he’s very good for us, we can always buy him in the summer, but I hope by then we can get someone younger permanently
I don’t understand. We don’t have an option to buy? I’m sure I’m missing something, can somebody explain please?
maybe cos he’s 29 and mancini wants to trust in our youth? (that’s just a thought not a gauntlet guys)
maybe arsenal doesnt want to give him away permanently yet. furthermore, mancini may prefer to bring someone else in the summer and doesnt plan with podolski for next season yet.
But if we like Podolski in the summer and want to keep him, can we do it?
Yes, but we will re-negotiate then.
Yes, buy out Osvaldo and bring Konoplyanka for FREE in summer 😀

Inter is broke as a joke so don’t expect them to buy anyone! Even the loan guys they got like M’Villa or Osvaldo….do you really think inter is going to spend the money they get from the Sale of Alvarez to buy out any one of these players?? this is a perfect deal for inter – they have a new rent-a-striker policy in effect.
Honestly, we have so little money, its almost 100% that we wouldn’t end up buying him anyway. We had a chance to buy Rolando for 4.5 million after he had a brilliant season for us at low wage while relatively young, still, we didn’t sign him.
remember that the main reason was that inter had to many CB´s
If we acted smart we would have signed Rolando and not Vidič, his lower salary would work out the majority of the transfer fee and we would have the same number of centerbacks that we have now.
very true. but, the whole reason tohir wanted vidic was of marketing reasons, which failed miserably
Yup. A gamble that didn’t pay off.
