This Wednesday 3 February 2016, Inter welcome Chievo to the San Siro in match day 23 of the 2015/16 Serie A season (kick off 20:45CET).
Inter come into this game on the brink of crisis after two comprehensive derby defeats against Juventus(3-0) in the Coppa Italia and Milan(3-0) in Serie A on Sunday past and it’s no wonder that Roberto Mancini is starting to lose his temper.
Ever since losing to Lazio just before the Winter break, the Inter coach has started to get increasingly agitated at Inter’s performances, culminating in a one match ban after being sent to the stands for insulting officials then insulting fans on his way off during the Milan derby.
There is a saying in football that a team’s midfield is what win matches and that is the problem at Inter. During the first half of the season Inter’s midfield were able to protect the defence well which covered over the cracks of not being great as an attacking force.
Since the Lazio defeat Inter’s midfield have struggled to protect the defence and get forward and it seems like they have real confidence issues right now. The midfield’s lack of balance begs the question why Assane Gnoukouri hasn’t been played at all. The Ivorian is a great prospect who is adept in both defensive and attacking phases of play and also when given a run in the team last season didn’t look out of place at all.
Despite their problems the Nerazzurri remain in fourth place in Serie A, one point behind third placed Fiorentina in the race for a Champions League place, seven points behind second placed Juventus and nine points behind leaders Napoli.
Rolando Maran’s Chievo come to the San Siro on the back of heavy defeats against Juventus(0-4) and Lazio(4-1) but the ‘Flying Donkeys’ will fancy their chances against a struggling Inter.
Chievo have perhaps punched above their weight so far this season and had been in decent form after collecting 12 points in their first seven matches of the season but injuries are now starting to play their part defensively. Also worth mentioning is that Chievo have lost their top goal scorer Alberto Paloschi to Swansea City during the Winter transfer window.
Selling their goal scorer is a massive gamble considering that the Veronese sit in twelfth place in the Serie A table on 27 points, eight points clear of the relegation zone.
Here is the Inter team news and probable line-up as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport at the time of writing this article:
Samir Handanovic starts in goal with Danilo D’Ambrosio expected to replace Davide Santon at right back. In central defence Joao Miranda and Jeison Murillo should start with Alex Telles expected to replace Juan Jesus at left back.
In a midfield three Gary Medel is expected to keep his place alongside Felipe Melo and Geoffrey Kondogbia with Marcelo Brozovic likely to be on the bench after his performance against Milan.
In a front three Eder is expected to start on the right with Ivan Perisic replacing Adem Ljajic on the left. Stevan Jovetic is expected to be on the bench in favour of captain Mauro Icardi in the central striking role.
Probable Inter line-up (subject to change): (4-3-3) Handanovic; D’Ambrosio, Miranda, Murillo, Telles; Melo, Medel, Kondogbia; Eder, Icardi(c), Perisic.
Bench: Carrizo, Berni, Santon, Juan Jesus, Nagatomo, Giamfi, Brozovic, Gnoukouri, Ljajic, Jovetic, Palacio, Biabiany, Manaj, Correia.
Some Stats:
Inter have faced Chievo at the San Siro in Serie A on 13 occasions with the Nerazzurri leading the stats with 8 wins to Chievo’s 1 win with 4 matches drawn.
In the overall Serie A records (home & away), Inter continue to lead the stats with 16 wins to Chievo’s 4 wins with 7 of the 27 matches between the sides drawn.
In the earlier fixture between the sides this season on 20 September 2015, Inter won 0-1 at the Stadio Bentigodi thanks to a Mauro Icardi strike.
Last season’s corresponding fixture at the San Siro on 3 May 2015 ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
Chievo’s only win against Inter at the San Siro came in their debut Serie A season on 15 December 2001 in a 1-2 win with goals from Vieri(Inter) and Corradi, Marazzina(Chievo).
Roberto Mancini has fielded 20 different line-ups in Inter’s 22 league matches so far this season.
Player to Watch: Eder – The new signing had a decent debut against Milan in the derby and was one of the few Inter players to come out of that game with any credit. Could be Inter’s go to guy for this game.
My Prediction: Inter 1-0 Chievo
Scorer: Eder
Officials: Referee: Paolo Valeri Assistants: Marrazzo, Musolino
Fourth Official: Vuoto Additional Assistants: Celi, De Paolo
Author’s Note: Inter despite their slump in form have been quite lucky in fact as Fiorentina only drew against Genoa at the weekend thus keeping the gap between the sides at only one point but there is a feeling that this is last chance saloon. A positive is that Inter take on Chievo and Hellas in the space of four days thus representing a great chance not only to stop the slump but to get six points to bring some stability to the club.
Forza Inter!

The OFFICIAL Line Up announced (4-3-3)
Handa
NAGASHIT-Miranda-Murrilo-Telles
Brozo-Medel-Kondo
Eder-Icardi-PALAOLD
I’m debating to follow my heart and watch this on a work day, or save my nerves by not watching it….
naga ,brozo and medel…again?!
exept naga, i actually like this setup. inter will at least pressure the chievo defense as they will sit back a whole lot. my guess is 2-0 to inter. PS! watch the game. inter will do good:)
4-2-3-1
Handa
Santon-Miranda-Murillo-Telles
Gnoukori-Kondogbia
Eder-Ljajic-Perisic
Icardi
Mancini has to give a chance to Gnou, our midfield sucks, he can’t be worser.
Don’t want to see another boring Melo/Medel pair… they don’t even pass the center half of the field to enter the Chievo side
just win, please.
My line up would be. Handanovic, D’Ambrosio/Santon, Miranda, Murillo, Telles, Medel, Kondogbia, Perisic, Ljajic, Eder, Icardi.
This fits the current squad. With Jojo and Biabiany the 2 options for attack and Melo and Brozovic for mid. It just fits. Switch to 433 if need in second half by introducing Brozovic.
Handa
Santon Miranda Murillo Telles
Gnoukouri Medel K-dog
Eder Icardi Perisic
And let what may come …
Ljajic out because it seems he could do with a rest… Medel over Melo so we could have 3 at the back when we attack.. And this is the game to do it. It’s Chievo.
No perisic. No loses 😀
I really don’t think we should use again that midfield with 3 CDMs
Just play 4-3-3 Handa – Telles -Murillo – Miranda – D’Ambro – Kdog – Medel – Melo – Perisic – Icardi – Eder. I still believe in Kondogbia. He can protect the ball well and truly play box to box.
January is gone, team plz star over with the right foot once again!
2-0 Victory coming today!
I think 1-0 Win is enough..
No. Not good enough anymore. Too risky. Luck is running out.
But what I tell you, we win 1-0 right? With the quality of the squad and the coach the result is fair enough.
I try to believe my self, it’s 3-0!!
Just waiting to see The Icardi-Eder pair. Hope doing well.
United as one team, just at the beginning of our season. That’s all we need.
5-1 …call me paul the octopus
paul the octopus already RIP.. LOL.. HAHAHAHA
3 points is a must!
Clear win. We must get in and take this win quickly, without any risk.
Gnoukouri over melo, and we have a really nice lineup
I agree absolutely

Hope Eder an Icardi can pair up. Would not mind a 2-0 win with Icardi and Perisic goals for boosting confidence, and maybe an assist from Eder.
Mancini will not be on the bench? Then Inter will win this game LOL.
2-0 will be enough.
433 is right formation and we are sure win this match
I like the potential lineup in the 433 formation.
Hope we can back to be a Winner.. FORZA INTER!
If I only see Brozovic on the field…
I guess you really can’t please everyone…when brozo was on the bench everyone was complaining oh why is one of our best players on the bench…bench melo for brozo etc.etc Now when brozo plays and he’s not what you expected everyone is against the decision to field him…similarly with santon and dambro…Mancini is the coach he knows the beat team to field just trust in him instead of getting on his back at every little error…because last year i don’t think we’d have been even in the top 4 ..so yeah let’s keep the faith bro
Agree with you.. It means that our player have a problem with consistency. Maybe we can name the player that quite consistent, for me they are: Handa, Medel, Miranda.
To be honest…being a huge fan of medel before and after copa america…his performances of late leaves much to be desired..this is because he is not a CDM But rather a CB..a very short one at that but his jump and agility would compensate…to say he’s been consistent this year is not true..he’s been decent? Yes..better than the other midfielders yes..consistent? Nah I personally would like to see a murillo medel defensive pairing or a miranda medel pairing when resting our main CBs (murillo and miranda) as you can see their performances has gone off thr boil a bit in the last few games…these players have been playing all 2015 for both club and country Miranda :star cb for brazil and starter for athletico with Godin and Murillo played alot of games for Grenada as well as Colombia eventually being named young player of the tornament…they need resting soon and medel plays great at CB for chile but only in a back 3 which would mean that our structure would have to change to facilitate that and with the quality of our full backs that might not be a good idea…but Mancini would work something out.Forza inter
couldnt agree more….
The thing is that Kondogbia must play always no metter what, because he has great talent and need playing time to settle. I do not want to see Brozo over him.
I agree with you 100%..i think kond especially has been below par but this is because he just made that transition to italy…by next season if properly managed we should see a kondogbia who can make a tackle and a good pass when needed but for now I don’t think Mancini wants to risk breaking in a player to a league while we try to contend for a CL spot…it’s risky especially when the midfielders around him offers no consistent defensive cover nor technical ability on the ball to ease pressure off his shoulders which is why I understand why some people want to see Gnoukouri but although the kid has nerves of steel he’s still a kid after all and if something goes wrong..guess who gets the blame? 🙂 but have some faith..a win here and over the weekend surely would see us back on track for a good finish to the season. We need these 6 points,it’s now or never
nahhh a good player plays in any team any league (like Miranda), kondo has been performing really bad, lossing to many balls not passing the ball properly and not even recovering the ball when needed, if a team plays bad, then he will easily shine and will be recognized as our main player, this is not the case remember Medel’s last season. but Flop-dogbia still has a lot to improve and our team spent lost of money and sacrificed our young star cause of him, i’ll rather to use Gnoukouri instead of him!
Not every good player hits the ground running when they move across to another league…it usually takes a couple seasons..my mind immediately goes back to ozil to arsenal for RM…his first season and everyone was on his back but look at him now? Running away with the most assists in the BPL…everything takes time.If kondo has any quality it should manifest itself in the following season if not we should cut our losses as currently he wasn’t worth losing Kovacic.I rather use Gnoukouri as well …I like him the best as a midfield outlet but it’s not us managing inter 🙂
good point of view, but your comparison it’s not accurate Ozil is a world class player, before joining Arsenal he played for RM, which in u think of, those are ambitious teams- if you search carefully when he joined Ar,, he showed his capabilities in the first 3-4 games, just like Jojo did this season, then he got injured, so their fans knew they had a great player, u know first impressions provides everything- then he regain confidence and now he is playing at a high level- but Kondo what has done with us? I don’t have a good impression from him, he just scored a goal from an elaborated freekick, but losing the ball in every game..
at least we can support our team by providing ideas 🙂
Kondo got an injury as well, which was why i used that specific example but yeah …for the good of inter i just hope Kondog picks up form soon..having gone this JTW without signing any midfielders officially it’s gonna be a big ask and kondogbia as well as the other midfielders must step up to the level of players who wear inter’s shirt.Unfortunately Mancini probably has no time to search through forums checking to see what we think or propose though I wish he sees the analysis that this website makes…it’s pretty informative
MUST WIN 2-0
I’m realistic, given recent performances, it’s going to be a though game, I think won’t win .
