Inter lack a role in front of the defense, the man who has to “replace” the coach on the field. Medel is not good enough, he is too limited technically. Joao Mario, who from his technique does not have a mind of a holding midfielder in which he sacrifices by playing “beautifully” than smarter.
Medel and Joao Mario – All coaches who have gone from Milan in recent years (Mazzarri, Mancini and now De Boer) have always started Medel when it was possible, mainly because the Chilean understands his role. Desire to do and selflessness – this, no one can deny Medel, but that in recent years the Nerazzurri have never really been able to offer protection to the defense.
Medel isn’t a Gattuso kind of player, for instance: He has great ability to put pressure on the opponents, but does not have the football intelligence to read in advance and resolve problems before they are made. De Boer has transformed Joao Mario to a holding midfielder, in front of the defense. All experts of the game have been crying “finally” we are seeing a technical player (Joao Mario) rather than physical player (Medel) in that position. Against Torino, Joao Mario was a nice discovery, showing capability to distribute the ball with confidence and always giving support for defenders. Inter’s new prospect failed to reach the fan’s expectations after a disappointing performance against Genoa, and the reality hit. Joao Mario’s performance was rated 4.5 which gives that feeling: “Maybe Medel was better.”
Against Sampdoria, the Portuguese seemed less serious, because it is not easy to learn now to play a new role; Also it is more difficult when he is a victim of pressure, unlike the midfielders of Sampdoria. What is worrying is the attitude of Joao Mario’s body: too passive, no determination to retrieve the ball, stopping instead of chasing the opponent. It seemed that the number 6 is not yet conscious of the tasks that the role requires, a role fact of great intelligence, which should lead to a launch in less effect and a ball intercepted more. In short, the Joao Mario project can operate, but you have to change the way the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder approaches the game. Not just small details.
The Solution – To improve the technical Medel, at age 29, would become a very difficult task. It is much easier to teach a new role to Joao Mario, but it will not be an easy task to drill him to that position. Joao Mario has age on his side, but he has to put a lot of effort and must also be adequately helped by those around him. Andrea Pirlo, who over a decade ago did the same route, passing from the edge to the middle, he did it in Brescia and with a great master like Mazzone. Joao Mario joined Inter as a savior of his country with a price tag that says 45 million Euro. A pressure wire in that threatens to blow up the whole thing.
Inter need a player like Cambiasso or Busquets, someone who can make the simple play when needed, and ability to read the game. This player can be a real assistant coach on the field. Stefano Pioli, first in Bologna and Lazio then, has always had a player with these characteristics in his midfield. In the first case, the keys were entrusted to Diego Perez, in the second case it was to Lucas Biglia. Even before arriving at Parma, the captain of Lazio was an object of desire to Inter, who have always clashed with a high price. A player like Lucas Biglia would be a unique example in the current Inter squad, given that the Argentine is capable of leadership in the midfield. More simply, Biglia blends the characteristics of both Medel and Joao Mario and would be able, at once, to solve a tactical problem not just with the advantage of having a coach who knows him very well and know what can ask him: Even if the Argentine and Inter roads do not encounter by return, there would still be this hole in the midfield department that Pioli, as well as those who preceded him, gladly fill with a suitable profile to take this responsibility. The alternative is to make a virtue of necessity with Medel and Joao Mario.

Maybe some here have a short-memory but as much as I love Cambiasso’s passion, he wasn’t the best of players technically. He was far too slow most times (that’s why he didn’t cut it at RM before he came or at Leicester after he left). His last season was bad too.
It’s Thiago Motta that we dearly missed. Motta made Cambiasso and Stankovic look good. But too bad he was a money hungry mercenary that harassed management until they let him go to PSG. Motta is one of the most intelligent players I’ve seen (I think Ancelotti once said that about him.)
Biglia is not Gattuso or Cambiasso, but he would be a good support to us.
just get back daniel bessa from verona!!
lol
I doubt biglia will come, it contradicts the vision of sunning. They want a young lad. Well I guess verratti would be a dream signing. He’s one of the most impressive italian young player. However, biglie would be a great addition to the club. And good bye melo.
Biglia only for short solution. Until we get main target UCL spot.
with all this talk of new players coming in to fill that certain role, should not the club first consider what tactic or line up Inter is to undertake under Pioli? obviously players like medel, melo, kondogbia and joao mario have been bought simply to suit the tactics of all the previous managers from mancini to de boer. i hope the club don’t just buy players just to fill for the new tactics if the coach only a temporary one
Very true, we need a regista and a leader on the field, that´s something many experts have talked about for years. Mancini wanted Yaya to come in and lead but got Melo!
Biglia is a great and complete player with great passing abilities and vision but he is about to turn 31 (in January), but still have a couple of years in him I guess! And certainly would be an up-grate to what we have!- If we can´t get Veratti that is;)
J.Mario would be a wast played as a regista!
BTW players in his pos.(regista) often are like good wine; they get better with age and experience! Players like Pirlo and Xavi Alonso and Xavi from Barca never played better than closer to 30!
I have been saying this for years after cambiasso departed.
I just wanna know who the fuck was behind Cambiasso’s leaving?! Thohir? Mazzari? Some son of bitches called agents? Who was it???
It has been almost 3 years that we have a black hole in his role.
It had something to do with salery, I think. Stop using regular finance people, hire Martin Armstrong. I am sure his name is respected even in China…
It wasn’t about his salary. Cambiasso had said he would sign any contract Inter would offer him. Thohir just didn’t offer him anything. He wanted to replace our old players with younger ones.
Cuchu said he would sign blank papers for playing for Inter.
It came out a while back that it was Thohir would wanted to get rid of Cambiasso because he had too much power in the club and was a symbol of the old treble winning squad (don’t forget they let Samuel go when he still had one season left, Milito already had his heart back on his boyhood club in Argentina and Zanetti retiring).
That was the beginning of the Thohir movement to discard the last of our champions from the Moratti era and to usher in his new era of young players. From a business perpective it was ideal for him because young players are more profitable and if he had a squad of young players then he could have an easier time selling the club. This is classic private equity where you buy a company when it’s in a slump, fire all the key members, patch over the cracks quickly and sell to the highest paying bidder.
I can’t wait for that scumbag Thohir to leave, when people cry he saved us remember he gave Inter a loan with significant interest! And these same people who preach Thohir blame Moratti for everything. Let’s be clear here, Moratti did make many mistakes and he did not know how to hire the right people to renew/restructure the club into a self sufficient entity. What he did do was throw money unconditionally to this club that he loves, blood sweat money( no interest).
Right now we are in transition, I hope Pioli can get Biglia. I have good feelings about setting up a solid foundation this year.
On a side note, glad to see Thohirs lacky Bolingbroke shown the door. Happy to see Suning roll heads, imo they will probably hire more interisti to help maintain the ethos of the club.
I can’t wait for someone to buy Thohir’s share, this little fuck is pure evil.
Biglia is good, but i prefer with more potential like Krychowiak or Schneiderlin
biglia is the best option, considered the coach is know him and he also argentinian.
He’s old.
When we won it all, we bought some old. And it worked! Too many kids now..
31 isn’t old for a dmf, look Pirlo was 33 when he went to Rube. Old teams are the teams that win trophies and a dmf is exceptionally important as he sets the tone (along with the GK).
Ideally you need a mix of old and young and our other starting midfielders are young.
We need the brains of Biglia ASAP if we want to save this season. (We also got Veron around the same age)
Biglia is 31 years old and injury-prone. Apart from that, Lotito asks for 30m. I think we can find a better option with that amount of money. Rube got Pirlo because he was for free. I doubt they would risk getting a 33 years old Pirlo if they had to pay a lot for him.
That is Philipe Melo!
LOL, kidding
Medel is useful for tough games to protect defense, but against weaker sides we need a more technical offensive minded deep lying play maker like Jao Mario. Gnoukori would be a good option as well, but still needs experience.
Would love to see a 3 man midfield with Jao Mario, Kondogbia, and Banega..
Medel has kind of good enough passing abilities to be a starter of play, from defence. I really want to see Miranda-Medel with Mario, K-dog, Banega, in a bit more defensive midfield than De Boer used… Banega 20 m back..
Banega as no 10 like sneijder in a diamond midfield with Biglia as DMF and Perisic/candreva + Mario/brozo as CMs
Icardi plays upfront with Eder/jovetic/Gabi
Medel/andreolli in defense with Miranda.
Sell Murillo to la Liga/premiership.
One of the a few time that we agree on something. lol
Lol… second one in less than a week…
lmao
Im so sorry but the midfield three doesn’t work for us because Icardi can’t play as a solo striker, he needs someone to shadow.
We need a midfield of 4 and Kondogbia should be sold to the highest bidder.
He’s done at inter, perhaps he can cut it in other leagues but he’s far too dumb to excel in Série A, theguy make Muntari look as smart as sneijder.
Sell his ass to The premiership with bonus clauses based on permanent ASAP. I think he will do well there, it’s more his style. (Then again he’s weak in the ball too)
Wingers cutting inside and/or inside forwards… The backs should hold a bit more back if so, allowing the CM’s to spread a bit more out than we are used to seeing them. First of all being secure defensively, and Banega can go further upfield when needed.. K-dog has to prove he is able to play as instructed now….
Finally, Medel got spirit.. But it has been obvious for quite some time now that we have lacked a proper holding midfielder. Cambiasso might still offer a better solution, than Medel…. Medel can do e reverse Lahm/Zanetti, go to back position? Or am I too adventurous now? Biglia i can agree on!
Yes give us Biglia and use Medel as a CB ONLY, only our team uses him as a DMF.
Pioli also sometimes uses a 3 man defense… with the quality of our fullbacks it may be ideal for us to play 3 at the back for some games until we can buy better ones. 3-5-2 still works in Italy…
What I thought here, how awkward would medel be as a full back, more of an older type, as was normal when I played as a kid. When playing against teams that exploit the centre and has more men on the midfield than us…. but I am not sure how Pioli plays his backs. If our backs are more defensive, we dont need so much defensive duty on our midfield… only gut guesswork here… I am so tierd of FB-mistakes now!
Yes, Inter need a true leader who can manage the game! Not just Formalities Captain!
Inter has quality, Inter has world class player (except the fullback) but Inter seems losing a true leader and true Captain! that’s why Inter doesn’t have balance on and off the field! Even the best coach in the world (right now) cannot solve this Inter problem.
“Inter need a player like Cambiasso or Busquets, someone who can make the simple play when needed, and ability to read the game”.. thats not the captain’s job dude.. why are u bringing captaincy matter into this??? by ur logic then we should change captaincy to miranda and the problem is solved?? the problem discussed in this article is protection in front of defense dude.. and clearly our captain not playing in that position
Good read! Finally. something worth reading during this sad. sad Inter period!
