On a cold and damp Milano night where visibility was impaired thanks to a thick fog that lay over the city like a layer of cobweb woven by an army of tarantulas, Marcelo Brozovic’s brace lifted the veil off of Inter’s eyes, albeit for just one night.

Pioli’s Inter need to give a performance tonight to secure the points to cool down the anger and resentment that festers within the hearts of the Inter fans after a season that has been disastrous and chaotic to put it mildly. Something that was manifested by the Curva Nord who boycotted the first half and began the second half displaying a banner threatening the players physically unless their performances and attidude towards the cause doesn’t improve.

Their frustration and anger was also fed further by Inter’s performance in the first half that was confused and shaky to say the least. In fact the Nerazzurri were lucky not to be behind after Genoa created and squandered many chances and instead Marcelo Brozovic gave Inter the lead with the team’s first shot on goal.

The gave Inter some confidence but this was merely fleeting as after the interval Inter failed to impose themselves on Genoa who fought pretty well thanks to Veloso’s intelligent passing in the middle of the pitch. Yet it was his compatriot at Inter, Joao Mario who served Brozovic with a ball that the Croatian couldn’t do anything but to score, getting his and Inter’s second of the night on the team’s second shot on target. Efficiency is what all teams aspire too however tonight Inter were lucky that they faced an opponent who weren’t cynical in front of goal otherwise Brozovic and Inter’s night would have been an epic display of failure instead of an epic performance by a player who only recently signed a contract extension with the club.

What does this mean for the future? Nothing, unless it’s followed up by a win away against Sassuolo next Sunday and then against Lazio a few days after. The first of those two matches is a week away and at Inter that’s a lifetime, meaning just about anything can happen but tonight a tiny light spark was set alight. Now it’s up to Pioli to see if we can do what none of his predecessor’s have done and that is to try to nurse this spark into a fire.
