Rodrigo Palacio reviewed Inter’s 2016 in an interview with Inter Channel: “In January we were the first in the table, then the next two months we could not play our game and we lost many points looking a shadow of the team from earlier in the season. We lost confidence and in the end we still finished in a good place but not as good as we would have liked. It happened a few times that we would reach the end even at San Siro. Everything that was going on positive earlier this year overturned in that period. We lost too many points with a little bad luck. There was some anger because until December we had proven to be competitive thanks to the work of the coach and be fighting for the title.”
The Argentine forward then spoke about himself: “From a personal point of view, in the first few years everything went well, but after coming back from injury, we changed the way we played and our movement. In the last year and a half I’ve only played a little and I’ve missed the routine, but I have strong teammates and they deserve to play. From the outside it all looks easy, even when I do not play the game I read it in a certain way. But then when you’re on the field space is much tighter, there is little time…Maybe I just do not know how to read the slots. I like playing as a second striker best, because they are closer to the goal. Playing close to Mauro or the other striker is definitely easier.”
He then addressed the series of coaching changes this year: “With Mancini we were very good, too bad it ended. He has so much experience, he was loaded with ideas and we worked with more serenity. De Boer is a capable coach with different ideas, who liked more possession of the ball. Too bad he never had more time but in football you must get the results and not just be a nice person. Pioli is the ‘classic’ Italian coach, very knowledgeable and very well prepared for matches. We are all happy that he got the job and we trust that he can make us improve a lot.”
Palacio pen-ultimately spoke on his plans for the winter break: “[I’m going to] Bahía Blanca [in Argentina], an area obsessed with basketball. But they still follow follow. I am a big fan and as a child I used to play both. When I started training with my first football team I had to choose and I chose football. Up to June 2017 I have a contract with Inter, then my idea would be to stay in Italy .”
He concluded, “2017 must be Inter’s year, I have faith, we work well, we are a good team but we have to prove it on the pitch. We have to get in the top three, we are a great team.”
