Inter coach Stefano Pioli had this to say to Sky Sport: “Gabigol‘s goal has much weight. Every game for us is more important than the three points because we have to recover lost ground and there are strong teams. Losing ground complicates things. I’m happy for the mentality displayed by the team, we played a polished game and brought home the result. I saw many positive things. We were not brilliant, but we had a great mindset, the right will to win. Gabigol is working professionally with a great work rate. His companions are good and he knows he must take advantage of the opportunities that came to him. It’s well that he scored, but even better that the team has managed to win. The team does not give up and is positive, has great determination, group spirit. We missed a goal with Palacio that could change the game. Late goals also mean that the physical condition is good. The Miranda booking has weight, but I have no regrets about it, he was too important today. Miranda lost his mind, but I have the solutions to make up for this absence. Murillo had a strain and will have to be evaluated. It so happens that this is the week when there are absences. Important that we won a difficult game.”

“Miranda lost his mind”
Im not sure how to react, from here.. :DD
It beats my imagination as to why Pioli elects to play
Palacio in most of our games. Palacio is spent force and has nothing else to
offer. He has outlived his usefulness to Inter. Fielding him in most of these
games doesn’t make sense because he will never score, he misses cheap shots at
the goal most of the time. Why Pioli elects to play him I don’t know, as a
result of his inclusion in the games we struggle to win the games we can win with
ease. At 35 years of age , the guy lacks the stamina, he can’t even run, pass the ball accurately nor take precise
shorts. I don’t know what’s wrong with most of these coaches some times, Pioli
should leave Palacio alone in other to make way for the younger players. We
know that Palacio contributed a lot to the team in the past, but not any more,
he’s a shadow of his past, Period.
Same question for all of us
just put it this way, when a track runner try to gain some speed, they usually put some weight upon their legs. just so they would run faster after it let off during real race.
maybe pioli placing palacio because he would like us to face our opponent plus one handicap. maybe he’s preparing for next season when palacio suddenly leave for argentina.
* how am trying to be rational, thou my mind keep pondering on the same question as yours :))*
In my humble opinion i think I might have the answer you’re looking for. I did wonder myself as to why place a 35 years old Palacio as a lone striker instead of two phenomenal youngsters just like you and the others have been wondering, so I decided to study Palacio these past games. I found out that Palacio was more involved with his attacking colleagues than the other two, allowing him to play as a false 9, and therefore creating more chances for the team to score as well as opening the game a bit (ex. Empoli game). It was to my understanding that although gabigol possesses the right qualities to play as a lone striker for these games, his desire to shine and score could have played against him and the team (ex. All his games as a sub has been dictated by him trying to score and leave his mark). Playing Pinamonti over Gabigol is totally out of discussion for now since playing the second one over the first one would only demonstrate Pioli lacks of faith in Gabigol. In conclusion, I believe his decision to play Palacio for now is mainly due to who’s more mentally prepared to contribute his game, and unfortunately Gabigol was not mentally fit for this. The coach knows it, and the whole team acknowledges this as well. Now that Gabigol has scored today, he could definitely see his chances to play going up however he still have to learn to play and adapt with his teammates for the rest of the season til Palacio leaves us for good. I want to clarify that I don’t like Palacio, never liked him even in his best years with us, and that I would love to see him at the bench for the rest of the season but like it or not I can see why he is using him instead of the other two as starters.
I dont understand with “lack of stamina and cant even run” part. The only this he does best is his mobility upfront. But that’s it.
IMHO, Palacio is one tricky bastard, football wasn’t only about running or stamina, it depends on the formation played, Pioli is a seasoned coach, not like strama (newbie) or even De Boer (untested), he knows how to compensate with Palacio’s decreased physical qualities. In my years watching Palacio, he is very good at drawing fouls, he runs from side to side much more than Icardi…Sure, he is MUCH slower, but he was always there when the team needed him (position wise) Old players tend to rely on experience, Bologna team defenders are on the younger side, and are more susceptible to trickery. As was said by Nerazzurri88, He plays a false 9, dropping down and collecting passes, this was for Perisic and Candreva to surge in to the box, hence you seeing Perisic having more chances, Icardi does this once in a while, Pay attention next time when (IF) we play 1st half badly with Icardi failing to score or not having any space, Pioli move him back a little bit, making space for Perisic-Candreva and when defender are drawn to them, Icardi is free to disappear only to pop up and score a goal. This has been the pattern.
Gabigol, as much as i love the kid, comes from a team who adores him and treats him like Messi, don’t get me wrong, he is humble, doesn’t talk too much (aside from his agent) to the media, and is always ready when called upon, I am one to say this kid has a bright future, but he is a youngster after all, and he wanted to kick off his campaign with a goal. and this could be his weakness as defender know who to defend against… Pioli throwing him late in the game showed him that he trust Gabigol. and the positioning of Gabi was perfect, did you see how he surges to the box to anticipate d’ambro’s cross? that showed me, he is more ready than before, because his instinct will be honed with the understanding of italian tactics.
Oh, and Pinamonti is not ready at all, he is a supporting target man type, he needs a partner. preferrably the deadly captain…making his job a cake walk.
sorry for rambling on and on…. :p
