New Inter signing Lautaro Martinez has described his move to the Nerazzurri as ‘the best option for me’ and spoken of his excitement at playing with captain Mauro Icardi next season.
Martinez, who will wear the no. 10 shirt, will begin life at Inter in July after his former club Racing were unable to convince them to loan him back to Argentina for the remainder of the calendar year, despite a meeting between club representatives when the forward flew in to undergo a medical in Milan last week.
In an interview with Fox Sports Argentina on Sunday the 20 year-old admitted that he would have liked to stay at Racing for another few months, but nonetheless spoke of his excitement for the European adventure that awaits him.
“I’m very happy about everything that’s happening to me,” he said. “Inter was the best option for me: we’re very happy about the decision we’ve taken.
“Two years ago there were a lot of clubs that were interested in me, but I decided to keep playing for Racing. I wanted to keep learning. [Last summer] everything was sorted with Atletico Madrid, but then a series of details made the deal fall through.
“It’s crazy how much Inter have paid for me: we thought my €9 million release clause was high… now I’d like to play with Icardi.”
