Inter CEO Beppe Marotta was interviewed by the gathering press outside of an event in central Milano where he confirmed that Luciano Spalletti will stay at the club despite rumors to the contrary.
“Spalletti’s situation is very calm, we have to denounce this negative moment but we can overcome it if everyone contributes. Clearly Spalletti is not up for discussion. He has done an excellent job, he is third in the standings. We need to look at things in a positive light, analyzing a performance which led to another defeat. We need to improve in terms of character, motivation and physical condition.”
“Today we are in a Champions League spot, deservedly so to I might add. We deserve the points we have. It is a squad with a specific DNA. What needs to be improved is the meanness and determination of the squad, which is aspects that are related to a culture of winning.”
Marotta was then asked about Mauro Icardi’s contract situation beginning with the redemption clause he has in his current deal with the club.
“I am against redemption clauses because if there is no harmony in the relationship between a club and a player, then if that player has to leave, he will leave. In this case there is a redemption clause, but this is not the determining factor in the relationship between Mauro and the club.”
“We have not discussed if we will remove the redemption clause. I think so yes [if Inter qualify for next season’s Champions League Icardi and Spalletti will stay at Inter].”
“I have spoken to the President as I always do after a match but what I have said is the fruits of the conversation I had with the President. We share the same ideas. on which route to take.”
“We have to be able to be capable of creating a unified body. We need to go through these difficult moments together. I have a lot of affection for Spalletti, he is a very sensible, prepared and correct person. We will find the way to come out of this difficult moment.”
“I must admit I did expect a moment of difficulty to come after I entered Inter. When you make your entrance at a club as important at Inter you know that there is a desire to win, and as a consequence you have to deal with difficult moments. I think that the leaders, both technical and directorial, have to take on these situations with great optimism and confidence whilst also being realistic and knowing that we have to improve both on and off the pitch.”
In conclusion Marotta confirmed that he has not been on touch with Antonio Conte stating: “I have not spoken to him for many months.”
