Former Inter defender Andy Brehme has described Inter’s 1988-89 Scudetto-winning side as the most professional team he ever played with.

Brehme joined the Nerazzurri from Bayern Munich the previous summer and helped Giovanni Trapattoni’s men set what was then a record points tally in Serie A.

The German was a guest on Sky Sport’s show celebrating the team’s 30-year anniversary and recalled the moment he realised he would join Inter.

“I didn’t think twice when Inter made me the offer to come,” Brehme said.

“It was a great opportunity for me in a very big club. We had real leaders like Giuseppe Baresi in the team.

“The president Ernesto Pellegrini spoke to us at the start of the season and said: ‘We want to win something this year.’

“Then I remember something else he said: ‘If anyone criticises the coach he will pay a fine’.

“There was profound respect for everyone. I’d never seen a club as professional as that, not even in Germany.”

Brehme made 116 league appearances for Inter during his four seasons at the club, scoring 11 goals.
