In an interview with PassioneInter.com, Inter legend Giuseppe ‘Beppe’ Bergomi shared his thoughts on Inter’s performance in last night’s win over Borussia Dortmund and also shared his opinion on several player’s performances.
“Inter had to win this game, they certainly won it with merit. The team continues on its path, they are a solid team that knows what it wants on the pitch and that reflects its coach ideas very well. He exploited the weaknesses of Dortmund,” he started.
“Inter played a serious match after having prepared well for it. It was a great victory, which we wanted from the beginning. The two defeats against Barcelona and Juventus can happen but the team had always been in these games. The team has a very good mental stability.”
He then spoke on Lautaro Martinez, who scored his fourth goal in as many games last night.
“He needed a player like Lukaku alongside him to open up spaces for him. He has grown and he is showing off his qualities. He is someone who knows how to play football, I had no doubt about that. I had other doubts about other things but not anymore. Conte is giving him the right opportunity to bring out all his talent ”
He then spoke on Romelu Lukaku, who struggled to get into the game.
“I am in no hurry to make definitive judgements about Lukaku. I like him although I know that aesthetically speaking he is not the best to watch. He is a generous player who opens up spaces on the pitch. He needs the team to get to the byline and cross for him.”
Bergomi then shared his thoughts on Sebastiano Esposito, who became Inter’s youngest Champions League appearance maker since him.
“I know him because I follow a lot of youth football. I know his potential, Samaden always speaks to me about him. Inter do very well in this regard but it is all about letting these guys play. It was his turn last night and I’m really happy. He did the right things. I liked his attitude. I think he can do well and Conte did very well by putting him on.”
He concluded by praising Stefan de Vrij and discussed Inter’s backline.
“He is perfect in the three man defence. He played in a back three at Lazio whilst the other two are adapting. Godin is used to playing in a four man defence, the same for Skriniar, it is all change for them.
