Andrea Pirlo: “So Many Other Top Players Were At Inter When I Was There”

In an interview with Radio Radio, legendary Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo has spoken on why he thinks he did not succeed at Inter like he did elsewhere during his career.

“When I was at Inter, I was just 18. At that time, Roberto Baggio, Youri Djorkaef, Ronaldo and so many other top players were in the squad. I was young and had just come from Brescia so I struggled a little,” he said.

Next he was asked on Sandro Tonali, a player who has drawn several comparisons to him since he burst out onto the scene.

“I see similarities in terms of personality but not in terms of the way he pals. He plays with great tranquillity and is not afraid to get on the ball or make mistakes. His hair is also long like mine too…[laughs].”

He was then asked about the progress made in the Italian national team under the stewardship of manager Roberto Mancini.

“Mancini’s journey started very well. He had the courage to let these young people play. They are good so it is right that they get to play. They have done well in the qualification process and are showing that they can improve. I think they are on the right track.”

In conclusion he was asked about his thoughts on Inter manager Antonio Conte, who he worked under at Juventus: “He is a genius of a coach.”
