Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has insisted that he will not settle for sitting on the bench because Timo Werner has joined the club.
The Frenchman came close to joining Inter and Lazio back in the most recent January transfer window but when a deal did not transpire, Chelsea activated an extension clause to extend Giroud’s contract with the club until the end of next season.
“Timo Werner certainly didn’t come here to sit on the bench, but I’m ready to fight for a starting shirt,” he explained in an interview with French news outlet L’Equipe, which appeared in today’s print edition.
“Having competition in the attack is always useful. In any case, Werner coming is a motivation for me to do even better.”
Although his contract has been extended, links to Inter have persisted in the media but Giroud went on to further reaffirm his commitment to the Premier League side, who he has been with since January 2018.
“My future? I still have a one year contract with Chelsea, then we’ll see if I will continue here or go to have another experience. I feel good and I think I can give a lot for at least two more seasons.”
This season the experienced former Arsenal and Montpellier player has made 23 appearances across all competitions to date. In his time on the park, which totals just ovr 1300 minutes, Giroud has scored a total of 10 goals.
