The Italian football federation, FIGC, have confirmed that two players currently with the Italian under 21 national team have tested positive for COVID-19.
The two players, who the FIGC have not named, were subject to a second swab test yesterday and both returned positive tests. Both players are totally asymptomatic and had returned negative test results on Sunday.
Training that was scheduled to take place today has been cancelled and the entire team has been in fiduciary isolation since the positive tests were confirmed last night and will all be subject to further testing today.
One report in the Italian media has today suggested that Inter central defender Alessandro Bastoni is one of the players to have tested positive for COVID-19.
As things stand there has been no comment on the matter from Inter nor has the player himself had anything to say on the matter.
This season Bastoni has made two appearances across all competitions to date, in which he has failed to make any goal contirbutions.
FIGC’s release states the following: “Two players of the Under 21 national team, based in Tirrenia in view of the qualifying match for the European Championships scheduled for Friday with Iceland, tested positive for Covid-19 after the second swab carried out yesterday and the results of which were disclosed in the late evening.
“The players in question, totally asymptomatic, had tested negative at the first swab carried out on Sunday 4 October, and had been admitted to the team group as per current protocol.
“In compliance with the current provisions, the training scheduled today has been cancelled and the team has been in fiduciary isolation since last night awaiting the indications of the competent ASL, promptly notified. All the delegation, players and staff, however negative in the second swab, will repeat the molecular tests this morning.”
