Inter Captain Samir Handanovic: “The League Table Doesn’t Matter Now, We Have To Keep Scoring Points”

Inter club captain and number one goalkeeper Samir Handanovic has refused to get too carried away following Inter’s dramatic 1-0 home win over Napoli this evening.

“It was a balanced match, very tactical. All matches are important, but when teams fighting for the top clash they are even more important,” he remarked in an interview with Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, immediately after the full time whistle at San Siro.

“It was important not to lose, but it was better to win. The match was decided by an episode. It could have ended in their favour, but in the end we won it. We will enjoy these three points and prepare for Spezia.”

He was then asked about what has been a bit of an up and down season for the Nerazzurri club, who are sitting in second place just one point off of league leaders AC Milan after this result.

“I don’t think there are ups and downs for us. We failed to score goals in Kyiv and against Shakhtar at home, in the league we are getting some victories.

“The league table doesn’t matter now, we have to keep scoring points and then we’ll see at the end.”

He went on to discuss his own performance in the match which involved him making several big saves in the second half which ultimately helped Inter to an all important victory and their fifth consecutive one in Serie A.

“I am the captain, a captain has to put a brave face on in bad moments and the goalkeeper has to bring home some points from time to time. This win is very important, but we are preparing for Spezia.”

In conclusion he was asked about the possibility of Inter winning the Serie A title, something many media outlets and pundits have suggested they are obligated to win due to their elimination from European competition.

“Scudetto? Many can say it but you have to prove it on the pitch that you deserve it.”
