Inter defender Milan Skriniar has explained the situation with a defensive error which saw his Slovakia fall to a 1-0 defeat against Russia in a World Cup qualifier yesterday.

Speaking to Slovak newspaper Pravda, as reported by FCInterNews, the 26-year-old stated that he made the mistake due to not communicating with the rest of his defenders.

Skriniar will be disappointed that his own goal turned out to be the only time either team found the scoresheet in a tight encounter with Russia.

The result leaves Slovakia in a very difficult position for qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, after the team had hoped that they could instead close the gap on Russia.

Skriniar will be frustrated with the circumstances of how the goal came about, but as he explained, it was nothing more than an error in communication with his teammates which led to the unfortunate own goal by the Inter man.

“I went to the ground in vain,” he explained, “but I didn’t know if there was a player behind me or not. We were unable to communicate.”
