Inter are facing mounting injury problems after centre-back Stefan De Vrij limped off in the closing minutes of the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Montenegro yesterday.

As reported in today’s newspaper edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport, De Vrij pulled up late on and was taken off in the 2022 World Cup Qualifying match, and will now undergo scans today to determine the extent of a thigh injury.

The newspaper warns that the former Lazio defender may have suffered a thigh strain and could face a spell on the sidelines, but the Dutch medical team are in constant contact with their counterparts at Inter.

It comes just days after fellow centre-back Alessandro Bastoni withdrew from Italy’s squad and returned for treatment in Milan, potentially leaving Inter coach Simone Inzaghi short of options for the clash against Serie A leaders Napoli next weekend.

Elsewhere, striker Edin Dzeko also suffered injury on Bosnia duty, whilst there are concerns over the fitness of midfielder Nicolo Barella.

Inter welcome Luciano Spalletti’s side to the Stadio San Siro on Sunday hoping to close a seven-point gap at the top of the table.
