Public Debate Will Delay Completion Of Inter & AC Milan’s New Stadium, Italian Media Report

The construction of Inter and AC Milan’s new stadium could be held up for some time by the public debate around their proposal.

This according to today’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport, who report that the clubs hope that the delay is no longer than 7-12 months as the plan to demolish the San Siro in particular is subject to public debate.

The Nerazzurri and the Rossoneri have been moving ahead on plans to construct their new stadium to replace the San Siro.

The two clubs have officially selected the “Cathedral” design from US architectural design firm Populous for the structure, and they hope the begin construction in 2023 with a view to being ready for the 2026-27 season.

This could be a tricky timeline, however, given the amount of opposition there is to the demolition of the San Siro to make way for the new stadium.

The “Yes to Preserve Meazza” movement has already filed official legal challenges, while a public referendum could also be a possibility.

Even with the support of city Mayor Beppe Sala, pressing forward quickly past this opposition could be challenging.

It is highly unlikely that the clubs will acquiesce on the idea of renovating the existing San Siro rather than building a new stadium entirely, as they consider the project essential for modernizing their infrastructure and increasing revenue.

However, it remains to be seen how much of a delay or an outright halt to their plans will come about due to the opposition and debate.
