Former Inter midfielder Christian Eriksen’s agent has clarified that the Nerazzurri had hoped to continue on with the 29-year-old but were unable to due to Italian regulations.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf in in interview published in yesterday’s print edition, Eriksen’s agent Martin Schoots also stated that the Dane will speak about his departure soon.
Inter officially terminated Eriksen’s contract by mutual consent last month after it became clear that the Dane would not be able to continue playing for the club thanks to Italian regulations surrounding his heart implant.
The midfielder could return to playing at some point, but this could not be in Italian football due to the law around professional athletes and cardiac implants.
However, as Schoots explained, the Nerazzurri had hoped that they would have been able to keep the 29-year-old in the squad, but this was simply not feasible due to the circumstances.
“It had nothing to do with Christian’s individual circumstances,” he said. “These regulations have existed for decades and apply to everyone.”
“As a result, I already knew a few days after what happened at the Euros that Italy was a dead end and that we had to talk to our lawyers in Italy,” he continued. “Inter wanted to continue on with Christian.”
