If Romelu Lukaku were to make the return to Inter this summer just one year after his big money sale to Chelsea, it would be “uncharted territory.”
This according to today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, who note that there is little precedent for many aspects of the situation if it were to result in a shock re-signing for the Nerazzurri by the Belgian.
Ultimately, while Lukaku is pushing for the move back to Inter and the doors are wide open for the club, the final decision will be made by Chelsea.
The Premier League team made a significant investment in Lukaku, who remains one of the most expensive transfers in football history, and would have self-evident motivation not to take a huge loss on him after just one season.
However, the Blues have just completed a change of ownership, and the decisions of new owner Todd Boehly in his first weeks in charge will be decisive to determining the outcome of Lukaku’s future.
Should the new owner decide to lean towards sanctioning a deal that would be feasible for Inter, regardless of the loss for Chelsea, then it could very probably go through.
Boehly could potentially feel that the situation with Lukaku, who has been vocal about not feeling at home at Chelsea and wanting a Nerazzurri return, is too much of a problem, he could allow the striker to leave.
Whether this happens will come down to how talks between Chelsea’s hierarchy and Lukaku and his lawyer Sebastien Ledure go in the coming days, as the 29-year-old pushes hard to convince his club.
Either way, the outcome of the talks would be all but impossible to predict, as the factors involved make this a situation without any clear precedent
