Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi is still expecting that wingback Matteo Darmian will be able to play a significant role in the team next season.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who report that the coach remains an admirer of the 32-year-old who he believes can help give consistency and reliability in the wingback positions next season.

The wide areas are crucial to Inzaghi’s system, and as with last season he should have four options at his disposal across the two flanks.

On the right, there are two specialists in the form of Denzel Dumfries and Raoul Bellanova, whilst on the left former Atalanta player Robin Gosens is the first-choice player on paper.

However, the German’s fitness could mean that he is not always available, which could give Inzaghi a headache as he looks to build the team around strong play in the wingback positions.

For his part, however, the coach is not too worried as he has already started to see Darmian as a player who can be regularly relied upon on either flank after a year spent working closely together.
