Inter have terminated the contract of forward Alexis Sanchez as part of their goal of making a significant reduction to their overall wage bill for next season.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, who report that the Nerazzurri pushed for the departure of the 33-year-old primarily due to the financial objective of slashing the wage bill.
Inter will not necessarily save that much from the exit of Sanchez on balance, as the severance payment made to seal his departure will offset a significant part of the savings on wages.
However, the club’s plan revolves around lowering the wage bill to a sustainable level, and so even though they will have to record the cost of the severance payment in the budget of the fiscal year just gone, the wage bill has lightened significantly.
Several other high earners on the fringe of the squad have already departed this summer, not least Sanchez’s Chilean national teammate Arturo Vidal, and with Sanchez now set to leave for Marseille the club are a big step closer to their goal for the summer transfer window.
