Inter defender Federico Dimarco feels that the Nerazzurri left things too late in their 2-1 win over Lecce in their first Serie A match of the season.

Speaking to Italian broadcaster DAZN after the match, the 24-year-old concurred with his coach Simone Inzaghi that the team needed to have put the game to bed earlier on rather than had to push desperately for the winner until the very last moments.

Inter got the three points that they were after on this after on this occasion, but they can’t always count on late goals like the one that Denzel Dumfries provided to get results from these kinds of matches.

Particularly in the second half after the home side scored, the Nerazzurri lost a lot of their rhythm, and if more of their matches follow a similar pattern then Dimarco and his teammates can expect to drop points in frustrating circumstances throughout the season.

“It’s certainly a win with suffering, but we deserved it because we created a lot,” he reflected. “It was important to start this season well.”

Regarding the opening goal by Romelu Lukaku, he said that “We did things like that last season as well, the important thing was to win now we have to keep working.”

Of whether he feels more at home on the left of a back three or at wingback, Dimarco explained that “It depends on the match, sometimes I play in the back three when we need more attacking thrust, and sometimes I play at wingback.”

Of Inzaghi’s remark that the team need to kill games off before the 94th minute, he said that “A team like us must close off these matches immediately. Otherwise you can have bad nights like some matches last season that we drew. However this time we won, which I think is an important sign.”
