Inter vice president Javier Zanetti has said that the club must satisfy Simone Inzaghi’s request for a new defender this summer, according to a report in the Italian broadcast media.
Speaking during an interview with Sport Medisaset after the UEFA Champions League group stage draw in which Inter were handed a tough group, via FCInternews, the former player was asked about the possible signing of either Trevoh Chalobah or Francesco Acerbi.
He stressed that they must give the coach what he has asked for which is a new defender to replace the depth that Andrea Ranocchia offered.
“We have to satisfy the coach’s request, there are the alternatives you know. It’s the last week of the market, we’ll decide shortly. The important thing is that whoever arrives makes a contribution.”
On the Champions League group which contains Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Viktoria Plzen, the Argentine agreed that there are parallels with the 2010 victory.
“Yes, the semi-final with Barça and the final with Bayern. But these are different times, football has changed: we will have to be very focused against teams with great tradition. We are ready.”
He was asked which of the two big sides in that group are the most complete right now and he chose the Bundesliga champions.
“I think Bayern because they have been dominating in the Bundesliga for a long time and in the Champions League they always reach the latter stages: they have a strong identity.
“Barça have found balance with Xavi and with Lewandowski they are very fearsome. We will prepare as best we can, we want to continue to grow.”
Finally, he was asked if a win over Barcelona is possible and he thinks it is, saying: “For me yes, in football nothing is impossible. Of course we will have to be in top form, but I am very confident because I believe in the work of Inzaghi and the boys. We will work to arrive at these challenges in the best possible way.”
