Belgian national team physiotherapist Liecen Maesschalk believes that there is a good chance of Inter striker Romelu Lukaku being back from injury for the World Cup.
Speaking to Belgian news outlet Sporza, Maesschalk noted that the 29-year-old is targeting participating in the World Cup with Belgium, and backed the striker to have the mental strength to complete his recovery in time.
Lukaku is currently recovering from a recurrence of a thigh problem that had already kept the striker out of action for two months.
Getting back to full fitness following the injury will not be a straightforward task by any means.
However, the 29-year-old will not want to be out for too much longer, particularly in view of the upcoming start to the World Cup.
It now looks very unlikely that Lukaku will be able to recover in time to play for the Nerazzurri before the World Cup break begins.
However, a return for the international tournament is still very much possible, and Maesschalk feels that this is the target for him.
“We’ll try to have him ready in time for Qatar,” the physiotherapist explained, “we’ll evaluate his situation day by day, then we will decide whether to stay in Belgium or not.”
“Beyond that I don’t want to comment,” he added.
He continued that “Romelu has a lot of experience and is mentally strong enough to recover.”
