Inter could be inclined to test out a new formation in midfield that would see two holding midfielders line up behind the attack.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, who report that the Nerazzurri coach could use both Marcelo Brozovic and Hakan Calhanoglu in deeper roles rather than opting for just one.

The emergence of Calhanoglu as an adept deep-lying midfielder whilst Brozovic was injured gives Inzaghi a new potential option in his midfield.

With the return of Brozovic, the coach could move Calhanoglu back to a mezzala role, or even play Brozovic further forward, but he could be thinking of another possibility.

Inzaghi could switch from his usual three-man midfield setup, which uses just one regista and two box-to-box midfielders, and split the responsibilities deeper in the pitch among Calhanoglu and Brozovic.

Particularly with Kristjan Asllani for depth in this position, Inzaghi is pondering a tactical rethink to try and get the best out of his key midfielders rather than forcing anyone into a position that isn’t their best.
