Legendary former Inter defender Beppe Bergomi feels that regardless of the talk that the team could be forced into making summer sales if they miss out on the Champions League, they likely would’ve been forced to do so anyway.
Speaking on Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInter1908, Bergomi weighed in on the rumours that major sales could be on the way now that the team will not be able to count on Champions League revenue.
There have been no shortage of rumours about what the ramifications of missing out on the Champions League could be for Inter in terms of their squad.
It is reported that Andre Onana could be the player sacrificed to make up for the budgetary shortfall that not having revenues from the competition would represent, as the Cameroonian could fetch a large fee.
Moreover, there are reports that the contract talks with Alessandro Bastoni and Hakan Calhanoglu could well hit a snag in the event that the club miss out on Champions League revenues.
Accordingly, it looks as though if Inter are to fail to either claw their way back into the top four of the Serie A or complete an unlikely triumph in this season’s Champions League, they could be in for a summer of squad upheaval with many key players’ futures uncertain.
From the perspective Bergomi, however, all of this talk misses the point a bit.
The former defender feels that, at the end of the day, this has been the situation that Inter have been in for two summers in a row even with Champions League football, and that this is an important consideration.
“Inter have been getting into the Champions League for years now and they’ve still had to sell for two years now,” Bergomi noted.
“I think the real question concerns their ownership, as well as the policies of the Chinese government,” he added.
