Inter Milan defensive stalwarts Francesco Acerbi and Benjamin Pavard could return from injuries in mid-January.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, they aim to rejoin the group for Serie A’s resumption.

Manager Simone Inzaghi won’t have his star defenders at his disposal for the upcoming Supercoppa Italiana duties in Riyadh.

Indeed, Inter will take on Atalanta in a heavyweight semi-final tie on Thursday.

However, Yann Bisseck and Stefan de Vrij will likely join forces with Alessandro Bastoni at the back.

Meanwhile, Acerbi and Pavard continue to work on their recoveries.

Inzaghi has omitted the defensive duo from his Supercoppa Italian squad.

Therefore, they’ve stayed in Italy to accelerate the recovery process.

With high-profile fixtures coming thick and fast, Inzaghi hopes to have them back to full fitness by January 12.

Indeed, Inter will resume their Scudetto defense with a routine-looking trip to Venice to meet relegation-threatened Venezia.

Pavard has been out of action with a thigh injury for almost two months.

The same goes for Acerbi, who picked up a muscle problem against Hellas Verona in November.

However, they could be ready for Inter’s trip to Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo next month.
