“I hope Daniele recovers quickly, I am sorry for him.” So Matias Silvestre begins the interview with Gazzetta dello Sport. The Argentine center-back who has just left Inter for AC Milan on a loan with a purchase option.
AC Milan, however, had you in their sights as early as last summer.
“I remembered that when Adriano Galliani called me to welcome me. His words made me fired up.”
Even Allegri has received you well.
“I also thank him. I can only say that I’m here to answer with facts. This is not a time to make any proclamations. I know there is a high wall to climb and I’m not afraid.”
Your refusals to Parma and Genoa resembled a child’s stubbornness.
“I had nothing against Parma and Genoa, I thank the clubs for showing me attention, but I was hoping for a solution on a high level. Luckily, AC Milan remembered me. I couldn’t have asked for more.”
Inter never saw the Silvestre we got to know in Catania and Palermo.
“Unfortunately it is true. But everything went wrong from the start. An injury affected my training and when I came back maybe I rushed it because I wanted to show what I was made of.”
And you lost your spot immediately…
“The coach (Stramaccioni ed.) changed the formation and the three-man defense got the results. So for me it was an uphill battle. But now I’m calm thanks to the fact that AC Milan are playing with four in defense, that is the information I prefer.”
Did you feel abandoned in Inter?
“I don’t make excuses. It was a bad season for everyone.”
In a team full of Argentines maybe you expected more solidarity?
“It went bad and that’s enough.”
Did things change with Mazzarri?
“I never had the pleasure to get to know him.”
It’s been tough months.
“Of course. Luckily, my family has been by my side and my agents gave me more courage. Especially Fernando Cosentino.”
You have trained outside of the training camp.
“Yes, with Schelotto. But I have been well looked after. Actually, I have worked hard to be ready. So now I feel good and I look forward to play friendlies with AC Milan. Well, if Allegri is selecting me…”
You will wear shirt number 26. Is there a specific reason?
“No, it was random. Most of all, I focus on getting the confidence from my new surroundings.”
Do you have any specific goals? In Catania and Palermo you scored frequently.
“I don’t think I want to make any promises. At Inter, for example, I was close to scoring several times, but it seems more important to show my talents as a defender.”
And if Allegri asks you to play as a full-back?
“I’m available. If it’s good for the team, certainly.”
How would you rate AC Milan’s defense?
“During the second half of the season the performances from the defense improved a lot. The pair Mexes-Zapata works. But above all, there is an excellent team spirit. This can be seen from the outside and I immediately got positive signals in this regard.”
So you already have a good feeling with AC Milan.
“I’ve always had sympathy for these colors. To some extent, it depends on Nesta, my eternal idol. In the final of the Intercontinental Cup in 2007, I asked to change shirts with him. I still have mine left, hope he has his too.”
