He made the difference for his country in midweek, and Fredy Guarin is working and improving to do likewise with Inter. He spoke about the upcoming season and much more besides in an exclusive interview earlier with Sky Sport 24: “That goal for Colombia felt great. I’m proud to play for the national team, it’s amazing, we needed to beat Serbia and to continue to progress. With regards to Inter, we did everything we needed to during pre-season in the USA for the coach to get to know us, regardless of our results. When a new coach comes in, it’s never easy to start firing on all cylinders straight away, but we’re working hard and are on the right track. We hope to get even better.”
Guarin then spoke about how the Nerazzurri “have undergone big changes already.” The Colombian explained: “Not everyone has realised it because some people just look at results, but we’ve progressed lots since working with Mazzarri. The gaffer has strength, experience and the team are with him. We believe in his work both on and off the pitch. What’s struck me most about him? How focused he is on every last detail.”
The midfielder then spoke about why he believes the fans should be optimistic, despite a disappointing campaign last season: “Because of the desire we have to start again, we are humble but we’re hungry and we can achieve a lot with this coach. Is it an advantage not being involved in Europe this term? Obviously it’s a disadvantage because playing in Europe is important, but it’s also true that we’ll have more time to work and focus solely on the league.”
Finally Guarin quelled any doubts regarding him possibly moving away from the club when asked whether he’d be happy or disappointed to be put on the market by Inter: “I’m relaxed, I’ve only ever thought about Inter. I hope the club don’t want to sell me, all my focus is on this team.”
