Daniel Etefia explains why ‘Il Cuchu’ should be given a new contract by Inter when his current deal expires in June 2014.

Signed on a free transfer from Real Madrid in the summer of 2004. Esteban Cambiasso was the third signing of then new coach Roberto Mancini. Cambiasso was arguably the best buy of Massimo Moratti’s era. Consistency and leadership has been the limelight of his illustrious career. He is currently the most decorated Argentine player in history with 23 titles to his kitty.

Cuchu might not have the quickest of feet but certainly he is endowed with a modified ‘medulla oblongata’ which makes him one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation. Very influential and blessed with an adeptness to alter each phase of the game through his elegant and breathtaking displays.

Under Jose Mourinho Cuchu probably had his best years at Inter. Forging a tremendous midfield understanding with Thiago Motta. Cambiasso has grown leaps and bounds and has become a key figure for the Nerazzurri over the years. Pivot man in Walter Mazzarri’s 3-5-1-1 formation. Cuchu has enjoyed the best possible start to his season, with three goals and one assist to his name. According to squawka.com and Whoscored.com, Cambiasso has created 27 chances (25 key passes), more than any Inter player and has an average passing accuracy of 81%, 3.6 tackles and 2.1 clearances per game. He’s controlled the midfield with aplomb, while time and again his tailored-passes splits open the opposition.

He intercepts the opponents attacks with grit and grace. When Inter are pressed, he can easily slot in as defensive cover where he screens the defence and attack judiciously. He is the only irreplaceable player in the Nerazzurri line up and has featured in all the games this season. Cuchu may be 33 but he is not an explosive type dependent on speed. Thus, he can continue playing into his late 30’s. Bringing in his work principles and aspiration, negotiations for a new contract should not be a problem.
